The weirdest thing about Modern Ferret magazine is not that 4,000 subscribers pore through every ferret-filled issue or that another 6,000 fans of the third-most-numerous companion mammal (after cats and dogs) grab it off the shelves at Borders or Barnes & Noble bookstores. It's not that, when it was launched in 1995, Modern Ferret was chosen one of the 50 most notable new magazines (along with George and Martha Stewart Living). It's not that CNN recently interviewed the founders (who are also the entire staff) about their January 2000 Ferret of the Century cover story. It's not even that min magazine last year named Modern Ferret one of the 12 best magazines of the year (along with the New Yorker and The Economist).

What's really weird is the the couple who publish Modern Ferret never thought twice about quitting their real jobs and starting a magazine devoted to a mischievous and misunderstood animal that is cousin of the weasel (not a rodent) and featuring advice columns written by ferrets, information on care and keeping of ferrets, silly ferret photos galore and full-color ferret centerfolds. The Sheffermans and their nine ferrets - yes, you read that correctly - do all the writing, editing, photographing, ad selling, paperwork, and idea-thinking-up for the bimonthly magazine, the only one of its kind.
